Texture Mapping
For most of our sculpts we will want to create a surface texture to breathe life into the object when it is finished, otherwise it can appear flat and uninteresting. Surface texture influences the way that light reacts to an object, via reflection, refraction and the creation of shadow, in conjunction with the shape and form you have already created. The smoother a surface is, the more likely you are to have light reflect and glare off it. The more texture a surface has, the more the light will be refracted, giving the object in question greater depth.
Texture can be added in many ways, but two simple methods involve sponges/foam rubber offcuts and pieces of polythene sheet, preferably clear and in a variety of thicknesses.
The polythene pieces can be used to effectively create crease lines of varying depths in the surface of the clay. Lay the polythene over the clay. Choose an appropriate clay tool, like a knife edge tool, press it into the polythene and draw the tool along it to create your seam, scar or crease. When you lift the polythene, you will see that the edges of the crease have been softened out by the plastic, creating a more natural seam. If you try it without the polythene, you will find the effect is much harder to achieve. Try using different thicknesses of polythene to see how you can vary the effect. The polythene can also be used to soften out other effects by, again, using it as a barrier between the tool and the clay when stippling with a stiff-bristled brush (such as a scrubbing brush), or a pointed clay tool, a comb tool, or the tines of a fork.
